There are many theories regarding the origin of playing cards. Some say that they were invented by China, and gradually worked their way west until they reached Europe sometime in the 14th Century.
Another theory states that wandering gypsies introduced cards to Europe, entertaining folk with them as they travelled from village to village, or that Crusaders returning from the Holy Land brought them home.
But when it comes to Italy’s introduction to cards, one name is integrated in to history like no other. Piatnik (a.k.a. Ferd Pitanik & Sons) were masters of card production in the 19th Century, and they continue to create cards today. Each pack has been arranged with top-quality cards and a particular game in mind – such as Canasta.
This set includes two full packs of playing cards, with three Jokers to each pack. If you’re a seasoned player, you’ll have no trouble picking these cards up; otherwise, rules are included for newcomers. Score points by melding cards and creating a canasta in this rummy-style game, as Viennese nobles did hundreds of years ago.
